Wigs can take your hairstyle and overall appearance to the next level. It can boost your confidence and make you feel more contented. However, when it comes to wearing a wig, the glues that hold your wig in place and combing can become painful. Knowing how to carefully remove a lace wig can not only lessen the pain but also save time.

There is a very thin line between damaging your natural hair and protecting the strands of your wig. This article will help you understand; Why your wig removal process is painful? Which glue remover is safe for your skin? and What is the correct way to remove the glue along with your hair wig or toupee?

Why Removing Hair Wig Glue is Painful?

A glue lace remover causes pain when it adheres to your natural hair. Originally, wigs were designed for people who shaved their heads or were bald. The hair glue was intended to be applied to the skin so it was designed to be safe. To remove glue from the lace wig and your head properly, you need to first ensure that you aren’t applying glue to your hair.

Ideally, you should always read the instructions on these adhesives and follow them. Adhesives cannot cause pain on the skin, and they cannot cause pain unless they rip out or pull your hair. Also, wigs are not supposed to lessen your natural hair. If wearing a wig is causing further hair fall, then it means you need to learn how to properly remove your wig.

How to Remove Wig Glue and Lace Tape Adhesives?

Removing the adhesive gets exceptionally painful when there is strong glue holding the glue in place. The hairstyling community prefers to use high-quality adhesives as they ‘melt the lace’ on your head making it look natural. The realistic appearance and security of hair wigs are however attainable through practice and correct procedure only.

When applying the glue for securing the wig, you need to apply the glue close to your hairline, not the hair. It spreads a little after applying the glue, so even if it’s too close to your hairline, it will stick to your hair. Sometimes, the problem can be small and thin baby hair on your forehead that is pulled every time you remove your hair wig. Shaving the unwanted baby hair can help you secure the hair wig painlessly in place.

Even when you are being careful while applying glue, there is a chance that you might have laid some hair accidentally with the glue. Therefore, it is recommended to be patient when removing the wig or toupee.

Whether your hair wig is attached through hairspray/ gel or with wig adhesives, slow and steady removal is the least painful. Gently start pulling out the wig and remain as slow as possible to avoid hurting the skin or the natural hair that is on your scalp. Wigs worn with the adhesive can stay in place for 2-3 weeks or more. Ideally, you should remove them after 2-3 weeks to clean your scalp and let the scalp get some fresh air.

Here is how you can remove the wig without causing pain:

1. Clip back your hair to make sure that you can access the area of a wig where you had applied the adhesive.

2. Gently apply the wig glue remover over the adhesive to break the tiny bonds of glue. Many wig glue remover fluids work on lace wigs as well. Once you have applied it all over the wig adhesive, wait as instructed on the box.

3. Most wig removers need 1-3 minutes to break down the adhesive.

4. Try peeling the wig gently, if it lifts, slowly dissolve the glue remover deeper into areas where it is still attached to your head. Wait a couple of minutes as before and try lifting gently once again.

5. Once the lace glue remover has acted on all the adhesive joining wigs to your head, your wig would come right off. Wipe your hairline and scalp with a wet cloth and apply the glue remover in your hair to get rid of the adhesive residue.

6. Clean or wash your wig to ensure the lace of the wig is free of residue as well. The smoother and finer the lace of your wig, the longer it can last.

Hairspray and Hair Gel Adhesives

Many individuals also use hairspray and hair gel adhesives to hold the wig in place. Hairspray adhesives should not be used unless you are applying them directly on the skin, your head is entirely bald or you are wearing a cap to secure your natural hair. Hair spray can easily spread to the strands of your hair and lead to breakage at the time of wig removal.

Styling products such as hair gels can also hold the wigs in place for some individuals who wear wigs occasionally and are intimidated to wear hair wig adhesive. If you apply your wig with hairspray or gel, here is how you can remove the wig or toupee without breaking hair and causing pain:

1. Wet the hair wig and the area where you applied the hairspray or gel with water. You can use a spray bottle to wet the hair or simply hold your head under the sink for a while. Let the water stay in for a while so that it loosens the hairspray or gel bonds.

2. Gently massage the area if needed to loosen the bonds. You can also get your head using your hands and rub to loosen the wig.

3. Gently try lifting the sig, if it comes off, start peeling and stop where it’s attached to your head. Spray some water and wait or massage gently. Take your time and don’t pull unless the wig is coming off on its own.

4. With the right massage technique and enough water, you should be able to remove the wig without damaging your skin or hair.

Lastly, no matter how long it takes, never pull off your wig because you want it to come off quickly. It can do much more harm than you can imagine. Ripping your skin means you won’t be able to wear wigs for weeks or until the skin heals.
