The Guide to Manage Dry Hair in Cold Weather

Unlike natural hair growing straight from the scalp, the hair on a hair system has lost the natural oils being distributed from the scalp. This results in the hair on a hair system being more fragile compared to our own hair. Hair systems are more prone to dryness and especially susceptible to cold weather. Dryness can cause tangling, breakage and even hair loss, so its key to keep it well-nourished. To keep your hair system in a healthy condition during the winter months, here are the dos and donts to protect it from dryness and keep it soft.

Do use a silk pillowcase

Using a regular pillowcase to sleep on can cause friction as the hair rubs on the rougher material. The friction contributes to unwanted frizz and dryness. Instead of sleeping on a regular pillowcase, opt for a silk or satin pillowcase. Silk and satin are smooth and silky which will not cause friction to hair. These materials will also not absorb the moisture from hair like a regular pillowcase.

If you have long or curly hair, sleeping in a silk headscarf or sleep cap can also be highly beneficial to combatting dryness.

Do protect the hair from the outside elements

Protecting your hair system during the cold weather and outdoor elements is key to managing dryness. Wearing cozy hats with a soft material lining can protect from cold temperatures and windy conditions. Rain and snow can be damaging too, so making sure to bring an umbrella or wearing a suitable raincoat if there’s a chance of rain or snow to protect your hair system from the elements.

All though there is less sunlight in the colder months, it can still oxidize the hair of your hair system and turn the color lighter or slightly red. Wearing a hat if you spend a long time outdoors will help substantially.

Do use a wide-tooth comb or a special brush for hair systems

Before you wash your hair system, use a wide-tooth comb or brush especially for hair systems to work out the tangles from the hair end and work your way up to the hair root. This will make it easier to wash and condition.  Get the same bristles comb from the following link: https://www.lavividhair.com/accessories/bristles-comb-for-men-s-hair-system_p90.html

Do shampoo infrequently and deep condition frequently

It is suggested the hair be shampooed every 2-3 days at the most, as over-shampooing can dehydrate the hair.

A deep conditioning treatment can work wonders to keep the hair smooth. Deep condition the hair every week and use a leave-in conditioner spray on a daily basis.

An important tip for conditioning the hair system is to not soak the hair system base in the conditioner for a long time. In fact, avoid getting conditioner on the base altogether. If the conditioner is left to sit on the hair knots, it can weaken the knots and cause hair fall.

Do use heat protection before using heat

Heat styling tools (including blow dryers!) are damaging to hair, so whenever you use any hot tools, make sure you set them to the lowest heat setting and apply a heat protection product to the hair.

If you use a round brush while blow-drying, do not pull the hair while drying.

Dont use hot water to wash the hair

Washing with hot water causes dryness to the hair over time. So, when you are in the shower washing your hair system, use the coolest water that is tolerable.

If you wash the hair system in the sink, wash it with cool water not hot. Coldwater is much gentler on hair.

Don’t skip on protecting your hair before jumping into a swimming pool

Although hair systems are fully able to be worn anywhere including swimming pools, it is not advocated. The chlorine in swimming pools is very drying on the hair.

To minimize the effects of the chlorine in swimming pools, rinse your hair with water in the shower before swimming. Even better is to apply a leave-in conditioning spray after rinsing with water prior to swimming. In this way, the hair absorbs the conditioner and will have less room to absorb any chlorinated water.

Wearing a swim cap would also protect your hair system as long as it's not too tight. The swim cap will keep your hair dry.

The weather can be cold and windy in fall and winter, which can affect your hair system. Follow our top do’s and donts to protect your hair.
